Dunfermline's search for Sunshine on Leith......
Date: Wednesday, 10th Apr 2002Can Dunfermline finally do what they have not done for over 40 years?
After a role reversal on Wednesday night, with Dunfermline actually getting a last minute goal instead of losing one, it is off to THE bogey ground of all bogey grounds this Saturday.
23rd December 1961. Not a date that might instantly spring into the mind of Pars fans. As Scottish Cup holders, they were also in European competition for the first time. Things were only going to get better for the next 9 years. Cup finals and European runs were about to become a popular past time down East End Park way.
Little did they know, that as of the 16th February 2002, over FORTY years later, Dunfermline Athletic would still be looking for their next league win at Hibernian!!!
Earlier in the season, we looked back at the classic League Cup quarter final win at Easter Road in 1989. That game apart, however, Dunfermline have struck a duck on the wins front since that pre Christmas match when Jock Stein was still getting comfortable in the manager's chair.
Our record at places like Tynecastle, Parkhead, Tannadice and even Ibrox looks good compared to the record down Leith way! The ground is only 20 miles from Dunfermline but something must have affected all of those team buses for the last 40+ years.
This game, however, has a real pot of gold at the end of the 90 minutes. 3 points for Dunfermline would go a LONG way to grabbing a top 6 place. Hibs have not won a SPL game since November, stretching back well before Alex McLeish decided to jump ship and head along Govan way,
Frank Sauzee has beaten Stranraer in the cup (after a replay) but has suffered many defeats in the league since donning his managers coat for the first time at East End Park back in December.
Something HAS to give this weekend. A record must be broken (unless of course it ends in a draw.........)
Dunfermline will have a bit of confidence back after their 10 men fourth back for a point at Dens. Jimmy Calderwood can still quote his favourite statistic of only losing to the Old Firm in the last (insert weekly number) games, conveniently forgetting the wasted afternoon we all spent travelling to Ayr United.......
So, will Dunfermline break their lifetime hoodoo? Will Hearts fans finally stop singing 'There's only one Sauzee?'
If Dunfermline can do it at long last, there may be few Pars to see it. A ridiculous minimum charge of £20 is putting a lot of punters off travelling across, another board with a lack of foresight in the SPL.
That apart, all systems go for three points on Saturday. Let's bury this bizarre record once and for all, setting ourselves up for 3 home matches in the last 4 games.
Prediction? 2-0 Pars (N'Diaye & Top Scorer Thomson)
