New Irish Midfielder Gary Demspey Joins DAFC!
Author: Jason Barber Date: Friday, 7th Jun 2002Irish under-21 international midfielder Gary Dempsey, was the first of Jimmy Calderwood's summer signings.
Bought from Waterford in the the Irish League, Dempsey comes to Scotland with a reputation for being a goal scoring midfield threat, here we look back at his career to date.
Well travelled Gary Dempsey now adds Scotland to his football passport, which has so far seen him take in England, Ireland and the USA!
The Wexfordman was a hot prospect at an early age, he just missed Ireland's 1998 under 16 European Championship win because of injury, and was released by Premiership club Everton soon after.
Dempsey then had trials with Port Vale and a couple of clubs in Scotland, before heading back to his home town in Eire.
Steve Nicol (the former Scotland international) then took notice of Dempsey and invited him across to the USA for a trial with his team, the Boston Bulldogs.
A brief sabatical there ended when he returned to Ireland to play for Bray Wanderers. His play soon earned him a move to Waterford United. In his first season there, he became top goalscorer (from midfield!), player of the year and was named in the Irish League team of the year.
This kind of high profile soon alerted Dunfermline who managed to snatch the popular player for a reported fee of £50,000.
This could well turn out to be a major bargain. Gary Mason will be looking to form a central midfield partership with the Irishman next season. These two young players together could well form the crucial heart of the team as Dunfermline look to build on the progress made over the last couple of years.
Here's to a long, successful career with Dunfermline for Dempsey. A few goals would not go amiss either!
