As feared, attempting to turn this tie around proved a bridge too far for the Pars’ patchwork side. A late goal from Allan Smith provided a brief ray of hope, but after Stephen Husband’s red card any remaining hopes were extinguished. To be fair, Alloa were easily the better side over the two legs and had they won this leg as well, few would have quibbled.

This was one of the most astonishing games ever seen at East End Park. Trailing from the first leg, the Pars went further behind when Iain Campbell scored direct from a corner, before missing a penalty. However, with the visitors being reduced to first 10 then 9 and finally 8 men, the Pars slowly pulled back the arrears through an own-goal, a Thomson strike, then a brave Millen penalty which took the match to extra time. There could only be one winner thereafter, and the Pars overwhelmed their short-handed guests with goals from Smith and a double from Husband.

Round two of the play offs v a strong Forfar side who brushed aside our young team on Wednesday night at Station Park with a 3-1 win. Dunfermline Athletic 1 Airdrie Utd 2
Sun, 5th May 2013
The Pars somehow contrived to lose this despite dominating in terms of chances created, and a couple of defensive lapses allowed already relegated Airdrie to score the goals that consigned the Pars to the play-offs. Although it was goal-less at half-time, that score-line wasn’t expected to last, and that soon proved true, the surprise being that it was the visitors who took the lead. Ryan Thomson eventually equalised but substitute Willie McLaren scored what proved to be the winner, despite wave after wave of Dunfermline attacks.

The season ends in disappointment for the young Pars. At half-time there was everything still to play for, but Celtic took their chances and goals from Lindsay and Atajic had them 2-0 up. Smith pulled one back with a fine run and shot, but almost immediately Johnstone scored a third to put the match beyond doubt.
