Two trips to Palmertson this season and two comical own goals. This time the unfortunate boot was on the other foot when Harris scored one of the best(worst) own goals you’ll ever see, to add to Buchanan’s close range header. After McMenamin pulled one back Cardle eased the nerves with a late finish after Graham had done all the hard work.

With this fixture originally scheduled for the day after Christmas, perhaps it was fitting that the two sides who love to hate each other finally met the day after Valentine`s. In the end it was the Pars who got out of jail, Andy Kirk`s late leveller saving the home side like a petrol garage bunch of roses on the way home from work.

Any worries that the Pars might rue their first half profligacy in front of goal were dispelled 80 seconds into the second half when David Graham scored the first of a brace. Further goals for Buchanan and Kirk led the Pars to a comfortable victory.

So near and yet so far – there were just 17 seconds left of stoppage time when Allison’s attempted cleaance cannoned off Neil McGregor and into the net to give Aberdeen a barely deserved win, and passage to the 6th round at St Mirren. The Pars go home with nothing.
