The quality of the game belied the conditions –on a foul night at East End Park, Dunfermline put on a heart-warming display to defeat Dundee and thereby maintain their slight interest in the promotion shake up, but Greg Paterson suffers a heart-breaking injury.

This was another disappointing game from a Pars’ perspective with key players (and a McDougall chance) being badly missed. After being the better of two poor teams in the first quarter they were mugged somewhat by a goal in first half stoppage time; once they conceded a second they never looked like getting back into the game.

“Dunfermline made their extra two men count”. So said the Raith fans behind me on the final whistle – the implication being that the Pars got all the benefit of all the crucial decisions (including Simmons’ yellow cards). Certainly there was refereeing inconsistency, but it’s easy to blame the ref when things aren’t going your way – the Pars deserved to win this one, and will be pleased to get another 3 points from a tricky fixture.

Sometimes it’s skill that wins games; tonight it was mostly effort and determination that earned the points after Steven Bell’s first half red card left the Pars to mount a rearguard action to defend Steven McDougall’s early strike. A second goal from Gibson gave a bit of breathing space but after Walker pulled one back it was a long half hour on the back foot.

The Pars move up to fourth with a 3-1 win over Queen of the South. McDougall and Woods have the Pars two up at the break and a late Bell penalty seals it after Weatherston pulls one back but the game is marred by two unnecessary red cards.
